A small fruit tree growing 4–8 m tall, with narrow, lance-shaped, finely serrated leaves. In early spring, before the leaves appear, it is covered in pink blossom, and in summer round, juicy stone fruits ripen, with velvety skin and a hard, wrinkled stone. It comes from China, from where it travelled along the Silk Road to Persia and on to Europe – hence its Latin name. Hundreds of varieties are grown, with white, yellow or flat fruit, as well as ornamental varieties with double flowers.
