Significance in each country

  1. Norway no. 5 of 10 cultivated

Apple growing on the Hardangerfjord was begun in the Middle Ages by Cistercian monks, and the fjord’s mild microclimate lets the fruit ripen this far north.

  2. Poland no. 8 of 15 cultivated

Polish orchards produce several million tonnes of apples a year, and old varieties such as Antonówka and Szara Reneta are a fixture of the country’s culinary tradition – from szarlotka apple cake to duck with apples.
