St. Kitts & Nevis · #3 tree
Mango
Mangifera indica · locally: mango
Nevis is famous for dozens of mango varieties – every July the island celebrates them at the Nevis Mango Festival.
An evergreen tree of the cashew family with a dense, domed crown, reaching 30 m in height and living for more than a hundred years. The young leaves are reddish, and the small flowers are borne in large panicles. The fruits are fleshy drupes with juicy orange flesh, varying in size, shape and flavour according to the variety. The species comes from South Asia but has been grown in tropical America for centuries.
Significance in the country
Several dozen varieties of mango grow on Nevis, often as old trees beside former plantations and houses; the Nevis Mango Festival, with cooking competitions and tastings, has become one of the island’s main events.
Where it grows
On both islands, beside houses, in villages and at the edges of fields; best known on Nevis, especially around Gingerland and Charlestown.
