Date palm
Phoenix dactylifera · locally: nachla (نخلة)
In a country with no rivers and almost no rain, the date palm is the most important tree – it grows on the farms of Al Abdali and Al Wafra.
The date palm is a tall palm with a crown of long, pinnate leaves, growing to more than 20 m. Plants are either male or female, and the female flowers are pollinated by hand. The fruits ripen in summer in huge bunches. The palm tolerates extreme heat and salinity, but needs constant irrigation or groundwater.
Significance in the country
Date palms have always accompanied Kuwait’s few settlements, and today hundreds of thousands of trees grow on farms and along streets. Dates and Arabic coffee are the foundation of hospitality in Kuwaiti diwaniyas.
Where it grows
Grown on the irrigated farms of Al Abdali and Al Jahra in the north and Al Wafra in the south; planted on a massive scale in towns throughout the country.
