Montenegro · #3 tree
Black pine
Pinus nigra · locally: crni bor (црни бор)
Dark black pine forests cling to the steep walls of the Tara Canyon – Europe’s deepest gorge – and the Piva Canyon.
A tall conifer with dark, deeply fissured bark and long, stiff, dark green needles in pairs. Older trees often have a broad, flattened crown. It grows on shallow limestone and dolomite soils, on rocky slopes where other trees cannot cope. It is resistant to drought and frost, and its wood is very resinous and durable.
Significance in the country
The black pine is one of the most characteristic trees of Montenegro’s mountains: its dark forests on the rock walls of the Tara Canyon, protected within Durmitor National Park (UNESCO), capture the spirit of the name “Black Mountain” – Montenegro.
Where it grows
In the mountains of central and northern Montenegro – in the Tara, Piva and Morača canyons, around Durmitor, in Prokletije and on the slopes above Nikšić.
